How to make a drey for Ringtail Possums

One of the easiest ways of making a good sturdy drey is to buy two hanging plant baskets and coconut fibre liners from a Hardware or Garden Centre.  They are very durable and will last for years. You can freshen them up by replacing the liners every so often if necessary. They are also very sturdy and easy to change their position if you have to.

After you have the two hanging baskets, take the wire hanging chains off one of them. Then using the one you have not removed the chains from, cut a doorway into the wire framework. (see photo to the left) Make sure you file / grind / sand down any sharp points from where you have cut the wire.

Then place the coconut fibre liners into both halves of the drey. Use a sharp knife to cut a doorway into the liner that you have placed into the basket that you cut a doorway into. See photo to the right.

Take the two halves and put them together with the doorway on the upper half - see photo to the left. You then tie the two halves together. You can use any handy items such as wire etc but if you do be careful not to leave any sharp edges sticking out. Little plastic zip ties are good and also garden plastic coated twist ties.

Your new drey is now ready to hang and have tennants move in! Don't worry too much about the door - just tuck the flap up for the present. The nnew occupants will soon remodel to suite themselves.
